In September 2013, a ship headed from Georgia to Mozambique faced technical problems and had to dock in the Beirut port. Upon inspection, it was revealed that the ship was carrying 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate. If you are unaware about ammonium nitrate the, ammonium nitrate is a chemical compound with chemical formula NH4NO. It is mostly used for fertilizers in agriculture. It is also a major component of explosive mixtures used in mining, quarrying and civil construction. Ammonium nitrate is not an explosive in the form. However, it readily forms explosive mixtures with varying properties when combined with primary explosives such as azides or with fuels such as aluminium powder or fuel oil.
The ship was forbiddeni to sail, according to a report published in October15 in "The Arrest News", a publication that reports on incidents of ship detainment. SHIP After efforts to release the ship had failed, the ship's crew hire the Lebanese law fim to make a case to be allowed to leave. The ship's owners had abandoned it.According to the report, the ammoniurn was unloaded and stored in the Beirut port in 2015, because it posed a threat to the ship The plan was to resell the substance later in an auction. It seems however, that for reasons unknown, Lebanese authorities made the decision to keep the ammonium nitrate at the port instead of selling it. This is despite the fact that the substance is highly explosive.
